UPDATE 8/24/11....
I have had this book for more than a few months now. I am adding to this review the following:
1) I still believe the information in this book is overwhelming to some CEN exam candidates. There is much information that is NOT relevant to the CEN exam in here which "may" dissuade or "overload" a CEN exam candidate.
2) I think this book is best used as a reference book for ER practice in general.
3) I do like the online quesions and answers which appear to be useful to study/review
4) I would recommend this book "IF":
a) it were thinned down a bit to reflect only CEN exam blueprint material
b) it were updated to reflect the July 2011 CEN exam version
c) a CEN exam candidate was able to identify the areas that WERE on the test vs those that AREN'T, so they don't feel they have to study EVERYTHING in there.
I have revised my star rating for this from 2 stars to 4.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Just received my copy the other day and spent some time looking through it and noting the content. I have a few observations:
1) The author's credibility as it relates to writing a CEN review book (a) how many times has she taken this exam, and when was the most recent? (b) how much actual time is she spending in the Emergency Department currently taking care of patients? From the credentials listed in/on the book - it appears very little if at all. I think a book written by someone who is currently practicing full-time at the bedside would be more useful. (As well the other two contributing authors seem to have limited Emergency Department experience as well).
2) The book content: This is one LENGTHY book.
