I bought this Kindle version after getting a preview of it sent to my iPad where I was impressed with the didactic qualities of the fine illustrations and the excellent text. This is a premier price but put it on a Kindle device or put kindle apps on your ipad, laptop, or desktop and you will save some weight and space. The visuals are fantastic. I have found the learning experience from this to be excellent.

The basic concept of this text is to get across the ideas to you. The illustrations are just fantastic! I have never seen a human physiology text with illustrations that teach the concepts so well. Currently I'm nearly through the early chapters that teach basic cell concepts - very important. What goes on in the cell is what goes on in the body as a whole. If your cells are OK, you are OK. Fluid balance, Krebs cycle, Cori cycle - it's about what the electrons do during these cycles. These cycles must work, or the cell fails. Vitamins such as B2 or B3 are coenzymes that are necessary for proper cell function. Poisons like cyanide stop the cell cycles and lead to rapid death.

The next chapter I'll be reading is on the Nervous System. Unlike some health related texts I've read, I can't wait to get started on it. This text is just that interesting.

Recommended.

As a math and chemistry major with courses in senior level biochemistry courses, I found Fox's book to be inaccurate in several areas (his explanation of DNA transcription using the codon/anticodon scheme is grossly inaccurate and would lead to wrong answers on the MCAT), or just plain obtuse. There are areas that he skimps over without much thought, and other areas that are belabored to the point of confusion. I would highly recommend Sherwood's book over this. It's too bad that I just discovered her book so late into our semester.
